Carlos Menendez is prospecting for gold somewhere on the Hassayampa River. He finds his fortune and after nine months decides to return to his home in Wickenburg. Natives who want his mule Clara for food delay his trip home. The natives capture Clara and Carlos has to decide; what’s most important? He decides Clara is most important. Clara has been his companion ever since he left Mexico and crossed the great Sonoran Desert to get to Arizona. The story follows Carlos’ efforts to get Clara back. He and Clara finally make it to safety in Wickenburg with Carlos’ fortune in gold.
