The Hillside is a modern story about change in one man’s life and the lives of the people around him. An earthquake instigates a big change, at least it seems so. But it turns out the big change is a generational change and a change brought on by age. The story follows the main character through the aftermath of the earthquake and into a realization that his life is undergoing a change. A change brought on by nature, by dissolving friendships, by young people encroaching on all sides, by creeping old age which changes how he views things, by a realization that his life plan does not account for these changes and by memories of his younger days and his relationship with his former wife. He struggles through these realizations all the time helping his friends, who discover the same things, move on to new lives. Finally, one day he realizes he is all that’s left of his old life, and he makes the decision to move on, with help from the friends he helped.
